Film Poster Analysis - The Grudge

This post is important as it shows how I have analysed a film poster from my chosen genre and assessed reason the poster is presented.

The film title "The Grudge":
The words are in bold text that is covered in scratch like lines. The text being bold commands that you take notice of it. The scratches on the text could be a sign of struggle in the film, of desperation to dig out of somewhere. However the text is a dark blood red. This can show that there is strong links to anger and passion in the film's storyline. The colour red also helps to make the text stand out further as it can symbolize that the essence of life will be spilt during the film. That death will become personified.

The background:

The background is pitch black. This can already cause you to think that this film is a horror film. The use of black can show that there is an evil presence in the film's plot. That something is lurking within the darkness, waiting to hurt you and drive you insane. The darkness of the background helps to enhance the brightness of the text and photo used.

The Women:

We can only see messy strands of black hair and upper part of the women's face. The main feature is the large dark eye. This can be a taster of how close we will be getting to the protagonist of the film, the shots that we will see when she is introduced to us and the other characters. Also this is a scare tack tic, as her face is obscured by long coal black hair which contrasts with her pale blue-tinged skin. Showing only a haunting wide black eye. This can also catch the audience’s attention as it takes up half the poster and is so pale in contrast to the background.

The tagline "It never forgives. It never forgets":

This is a type of tagline or slogan for the film. This will cause the audience to ask questions. What does it never forget? What incident caused this entity to be born? Why won’t it forgive? What is the entity? The slogan causes a chill to run through your body as you realize that even if you haven’t done anything to this supernatural being, it will still try to cause harm to you and play tricks with your mind. All because of something that happened to it when it was alive. Something that caused it to be so evil and unforgiving that it would kill the innocent.

"Sarah Michelle Geller":

The name of the main actress who plays the main character tormented by the protagonist. It is show in pale grey colour as to still be noticeable but not draw the attention from the title or the women.

Text at the bottom:

Show us the other people and companies that are involved in the making and publishing of the film. Also show the logos of some of the companies.

The word "October":

This is in blood red. This draws attention to it as it's the release month for the film.

DoYouHaveAGrudge.com:

A website to promote the film with news on its release and sequels.

From this post I have learned that this genre uses dark colours in their posters to represent the dark subject matter of the film. Also that they use bright colours like red to help make the poster stand out, the red representing blood. Also the use of pictures on a poster can help add to the feel you get from the film.
