Film Genre - Supernatural Horror

The importance of this post is that it shows the research I did on the genre which I have chosen to do my film trailer on.

Codes and Conventions.

-          Always has a supernatural being as the bad guy. Examples being vampires, ghost, werewolves and witches.
-          Always starts out as normal and things progressively get worse throughout the film.
-          They build up tension using eerie atmospheric music which heightens at the point where the apparent ‘fright’ happens.

What do you expect to see in these films?

-          A normal family.
-          A supernatural being that is terrorising the family or a member of the family.
-          Things that have no explanation.

What Kind of stylistic feature are employed?

Camera shots used: Extreme close ups to take up all the audiences’ attention. Close ups to draw attention to an expression on a character’s face or an object of interest. Over the shoulder shots to allow us to see things going on behind the character.

Music used: Eerie string music, perhaps some dramatic piano music with strings to enter sharply at points where the ‘fright’ is happening.

Editing Style used: Slow long duration cuts to heighten the intensity of the atmosphere and put the audience in edge. Use of quick cuts to replicate the speed of the heart during a scare to make the audience feel the character’s emotions.

What kind of audience does this genre appeal to?

Younger audience between the ages of 16-20 because they like to watch things that will try to make them jump. Example being a ghost jumping up at the screen during a scene. Also they like the idea of things happening without a clear explanation making it just that much more eerie.

How has the genre changed over the years?

The genre has become cleverer in how they catch their audiences off guard. By using the ambiance in the scene they heighten the music subtly as they get close to the scare but like the scare up with the musical sting so that they arrive at the same time giving the audience less time to prepare for what they will see.

Why do you think that the genre is still popular?

I think the genre is still popular because it can always change how it scares you or can catch you with obvious scares that you weren’t expecting.

Has the genre become more difficult to define over the years?

Yes as supernatural horrors are seen as a sub-genre in the main genre Horror. Because it’s a specific type of sub-horror which is similar to psychological horror.

List five things that you feel definitely need to be included in order to make the genre recognisable for audiences.

-          Must include a supernatural being. ( Maybe a Onryō/ ghost)
-          Eerie music to create a spooky ambiance.
-          A normal character/family. (Sense of reality)
-          A place rumoured to be cursed/haunted
-          Chain of unexplainable events.

From this post I have learned some key things that need to be included in my film trailer if I want it to fit into the supernatural genre.I have learned about a variety of different shots used, the editing style and the use of music.
